Residents Install Signs To Protect Sandhill Cranes In Odessa Florida Neighborhoods

Starkey Ranch residents in Odessa, Florida have taken action to protect local sandhill cranes from being struck by vehicles on neighborhood streets. The community has grown and with it the danger these iconic birds face from speeding drivers and other road hazards. High school science teacher Chase Enloe organized a citizen science project that collected data on wildlife sightings and roadkill incidents over nearly two years. This impressive dataset helped convince the homeowners association to install wildlife crossing signs at key locations throughout the community. The effort has been inspired by similar successful advocacy in nearby Trinity where signs were also installed to protect cranes. Residents hope these new signs will encourage drivers to slow down and give the birds time to cross safely. Sandhill cranes are a threatened species protected under Florida law and their survival depends on community awareness and cooperation with wildlife conservation efforts.
