Pasco County Installs Harm Reduction Vending Machines for Free Health Supplies

Pasco County has introduced four harm-reduction vending machines to address behavioral health needs across the community. These machines, located at BayCare Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center in Dade City and Life Church Community Center in Wesley Chapel, provide free access to essential supplies including toiletry kits, drug disposal bags, HIV testing kits, fentanyl test strips, and Narcan. Clinical Manager Sonya Bufe noted that the machines have been operational for several months with toiletry kits being the most requested item. The program allows individuals to obtain these resources anonymously at no cost, ensuring timely access to needed supplies without financial barriers. As one of the first counties in Florida to implement this nationwide initiative, Pasco County aims to meet the high demand for substance use and mental health services. Research indicates that such machines contribute to reducing overdose deaths by providing free access to critical health resources around the clock.
