Baby Deer Rescued From Pasco County Wildfire Recovering Well At Sanctuary

Two baby deer named Phoenix and Tala were rescued from a wildfire that scorched approximately 500 acres in Pasco County last week. Both fawns sustained minor injuries and burns but are now recovering well at the Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife in Odessa after receiving treatment from volunteers. Firefighter Cameron Hall rescued Phoenix while battling the blaze near State Road 52, providing immediate care including water and oxygen to help the frightened animal relax. A family later brought two additional fawns believed to be twins from the same wildfire area in Brooksville, though one unfortunately did not survive. Wildlife experts explain that newborn deer often become separated from their mothers during fast-moving fires since they cannot flee on their own and wait for their mothers to return. Sanctuary director Kris Porter notes that many people mistakenly believe lone fawns are abandoned when mother deer commonly leave them hidden while searching for food. Both Phoenix and Tala have shown encouraging signs of recovery and are expected to become independent over the coming months with continued care at the sanctuary.
