Sierra, a husky, was found at Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services in early April, appearing thin and in poor condition after a long period of neglect. The shelter staff discovered a microchip on her, which led to a phone number and her former owner, Bryce, who had not seen her for 12 years when she went missing during a move from New Mexico. After thorough medical treatment, medication, and daily enrichment while in the shelter’s care, Sierra was prepared for a flight back to Bryce’s home in Midland, Texas. A volunteer-led team from We Rate Dogs, supported by Many Paws Volunteer Transport and sponsored by Best Western, organized a coast-to-coast road trip that spanned five states, with stops at landmarks such as the GatorWorld site and the world’s largest operational fire hydrant, where Sierra received various treats. Upon arrival at Bryce’s residence, Sierra did not immediately recognize him, a common reaction after such a long separation, but she quickly began to bond, showing signs of recovery and contentment in her new environment.
