The city of Port Richey has moved forward with its proposed canal dredging project after approving a contract with engineering firm Stantec. Council members unanimously voted to fund the $106,282 agreement which will prepare 60% design plans and conduct additional environmental surveys. The project focuses on selected residential canals within city limits due to their usage and boat traffic patterns. Dredging aims to address resident concerns regarding navigation difficulties, flooding risks, and overall water quality issues. After permit applications are submitted this year, regulatory agencies including the Florida Department of Environmental Protection will review them over an estimated 18 to 24 month period. Once approved, dredging operations could commence within the same year while funding comes from Penny for Pasco revenue sources. The city plans to develop a long-term maintenance strategy after the initial multi-year project concludes.
